Music Appreciation: Chopin and Delacroix, Debussy and Monet

Course dates: 01 June 2015 - 03 June 2015

Take a journey from Romanticism to Impressionism in music and painting. Chopin met Delacriox in Paris in 1836, but theirs was an unusual friendship. Delacroix, a reasonable pianist, knew and admired Chopin’s music, whereas the composer reeled away from his friend’s paintings and, according to George Sand, 'literally suffers and finds not a word to say'. In her dairy of 1841, Sand recorded that Delacroix believed there were many similarities 'between the tones of painting and the sounds of music' and this was embraced later by Debussy in his music and Monet in his paintings. Using digital format illustrations, piano and recorded music, Romanticism will progress into Impressionism before our eyes and ears.
