Millinery: Create a Modern Felt Cloche Hat and Unique Fascinator

This course will provide you with an in depth insight in to the world of hat making. We will use traditional millinery techniques to create modern felt cloches that are suitable for both a trip into town or an elegant winter wedding. We will also cover many different trimming techniques including working with sinamay fabric and felting flowers with merino wool.

History and Heritage: The Arts and Crafts Movement

Course dates: 01 September 2015 - 04 September 2015

This course will examine the Arts and Craft movement in the context of their rebellion against industrialisation and their interest in the natural world. You will visit William Morris’s house for many decades, Kelmscott Manor, as well as Rodmarton Manor in Gloucestershire, a unique example of a house and garden built and furnished entirely in the Arts and Crafts tradition. There will be some walking around house grounds. Please contact the tutor if there are any questions about mobility.

History and Heritage: Fresh Air and Fine Houses

Course dates: 04 September 2015 - 06 September 2015

This informal course looks at the changes in house building through the centuries and the social reasons behind the variation in design. Using a mixture of illustrated talks, discussions and visits to local villages and a classical country house, members will be introduced to the skills of the mediaeval carpenter and the elegance of 18th and 19th century design, plus the influence of London's houses that shaped the parkland estates of wealthy merchants. Detecting houses that represent more than one period will be included as a skill that anybody can pick up. It is a course with something for everybody, irrespective of previous knowledge.

Stained Glass: Christmas Decorations

Course dates: 04 September 2015 - 06 September 2015

Learn to cut glass, foil and solder, discovering the art of stained glass copperfoil work. Make your own beautiful lightcatchers, stars, Christmas trees, candles and angels to hang on your tree or stand by your window. Some items can even be displayed throughout the year! Asia plays a huge influence on Peter Lien's cookery so join him on a journey through the Far East, stopping off in Japan, China, South East Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Starting with a selection of Pan-Asian street food which you will prepare for lunch, the course will include miso glazed salmon, mee goreng, beef rendang and dal with roti bread.
