Full course description:
When wry humour illuminates social and political observation, then satire is alive and well. Both Flanders and Swann and Tom Lehrer marry a remarkable musical mimicry with an equally creative use of the English language (and on occasion Greek and Russian!). With a style ranging from Noel Coward through folk-song to the Wild West, the objects of their penetrating wit are still instantly recognisable.
We will have a look at what it is they are lampooning, and how they do it. We will perform some of them ourselves, and most of all, we will have a lot of fun. In the words of one of Tom Lehrer's most famous songs, 'Be Prepared'!
