Calligraphy is defined in the dictionary as the art of beautiful writing – penmanship, but you do not have to be an artist to enjoy this craft and obtain satisfying results. This course has been designed to help the absolute beginner to ‘make good letters and arrange them well’. You will concentrate on the Foundation Hand – this being the ‘mother hand’ – before going on to look at elements of layout and design and the use of colour, with the aim of working towards a finished piece of work. The tutor will ensure that interest is maintained during the course through the use of demonstrations and by providing the group with interesting projects which will allow for the immediate application of skills learned. Students will be able to work at their own pace with individual instruction from the tutor. It is hoped that by the end of the workshop, students will be able to take away a short piece of work and feel confident to attend further courses. Left handers welcome! To take full advantage of the workshop, students are invited to find a suitable quotation to write out. Suggested length 8-12 words. The tutor will offer ideas as well. During the course the following will be covered: * Individual guidance on lettering/spacing * Advice on layout and design * Ruling lines accurately * Choosing paper (some papers are avilable from the college shop) * Erasing mistakes Students to Bring: H or HB pencil Pencil sharpener or knife Rubber Ruler A wide fibre tip calligraphy pen - 5mm (Berol or similar) A3 layout pad Nib holder No. 0 Mitchells Roundhand nibs (square cut) plus any other sizes you fancy, and a brass resevoir for each. The copperplate hand is directly derived from the transference of the italic hand onto copper plates with an engraving tool for the purpose of printing. The engraving tool influenced the style of the lettering and it evolved into the fluid, flamboyant hand we are all familiar with. Unlike most other forms of calligraphy, copperplate uses a pointed nib rather than one of a chisel edge, and relies on pressure on the nib for stress and emphasis. Once a certain competence is achieved, the student will settle into a rhythm of writing which cannot be experienced in other forms of calligraphy. We will initially discuss the italic hand and go into technicalities of nibs, inks and papers. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience. Left-handers are also very welcome as this hand will be easier for them than for right-handers! Please bring with you: Pencil, ruler, pencil sharpener or knife, rubber, a bottle of black fountain pen ink (preferably NOT Windsor and Newton’s ink), an A3 pad of cartridge paper (or you can buy it by the sheet at Denman), a copperplate ‘elbow’ nib*, a nib holder*, cloth or tissues, apron in case of ink spillage, a piece of prose or a poem of your choice to write out. *Available from most good art shops, or by mail order from: Blots Pen and Ink Supplies, 0161 720 6916, www.blotspens.co.uk

The hand that springs most to mind when the word calligraphy is mentioned is Gothic, or Black Letter as it is often known. It is characterised by its closed spaced upright strokes and has become much used to represent anything 'Olde English'. We will work from historic examples and study basic calligraphy techniques, initially with a fibre tip pen and progressing to a broad edged metal nib. No previous experience of calligraphy is expected, but those with some experience are very welcome.

At this workshop you will look carefully at the basic italic script to ensure that you are doing it correctly. Then you will relax and add a “flourish” to the italic letter form. Creating the many variations of flourished flowing italic letter shapes can be achieved with a small selection of nibs, pens, some imagination and above all, confidence. The smaller letter forms can be delicate and gentle, stretched or manipulated and the flourishes on capitals can be big, bold and boisterous to enhance all your letter shapes. Flourished italic is great for creating Christmas cards, especially when colour is added. This workshop is suitable for all levels to enjoy.

The italic hand was developed during the Italian Renaissance as a means of speeding up the laborious process of handwriting a document. It is characterised by its forward slope, elliptical ‘o’ and 45 degree pen angle. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful hand of all, and can be a stepping-off point for the study of other hands, including copperplate, which was an 18th century development of italic. During the course, you will study the basics of calligraphic techniques, the use of the broad-edged pen, inks and metal nibs. You will study in detail each of the letters in both the upper and lower case alphabets, and study the basics of design. Finally we will complete a project based on a short poem or piece of prose that you have brought with you. NOTES FOR STUDENTS Students to bring: Wide fibre tip calligraphy pen (5mm). These can be found in most art shops including WH Smith, and are made by Berol, Pilot, Edding, etc. If you live in a remote area, you can obtain these online or on the phone from the company below. It is important to have a wide nib, please do not just bring narrow nibs. Mitchell Roundhand nibs numbers 0, 3 and 4 with reservoirs and a holder. Black ink (not waterproof ink – ordinary fountain pen ink is fine). A3 layout paper (cartridge paper for finished work will be available for sale). Rag or tissues. Pencil, sharpener, ruler, rubber. A short piece of prose, poem or something that has a particular meaning for you. If you have trouble obtaining any of these please phone 'Blots' on 0161 720 6916 (www.blotspens.co.uk).

The beautiful and complex patterns that we are all familiar with in Celtic art were actually developed from earlier examples of interlacing designs from the Romans, and much earlier Chinese work. Though it is difficult when looking at them to imagine the methods of construction, it is actually quite a simple method that can be learned by anyone without an artistic background. During the course you will cover square knots and triangular knots, which can be applied in many areas of the arts and crafts, such as embroidery, patchwork, calligraphy, woodcarving and stained glass. No previous knowledge is required.

This fun filled course will open up the world of free machine embroidery to you. If you have heard of it but wasn’t quite sure what it was all about then this is the course for you. The techniques themselves are easy and you will see that with just a little practise how easy it is to “draw with the needle”. You don’t need a complicated sewing machine to do this you just need to be able to lower your teeth (or put a plate over them) and put on a free-machine embroidery foot (darning foot). If you don’t have a sewing machine you can still come along as the college has a machine it can lend you.
At the end of the week you will have plenty of samples and two pieces of work- one which can be a picture or a panel for a cushion cover and one three-dimensional piece. You will also have the knowledge to do other projects at home.

Are you terrified of drawing but have a secret longing to learn how to do it? Then enrol on this course where Richard will guide you through certain processes slowly, gently and step by step. If you follow his 'recipes', you will be amazed at what you will be able to draw. You will stay with a simple still life for the whole course. The main focus will be on learning how to see what is often merely glanced at. Once this is understood and put into practice, you will be able to try many and various drawing techniques in both monochrome and colour. Thereafter, at home, you will be able to apply these to any subject you like.

Coloured pencils are often overlooked as a drawing medium, but they do offer an opportunity to create a soft painterly image if used in a sensitive way. A selection of photos of landscape and gardens will be the chosen subject matter to use as inspiration for a drawing with coloured pencils. Demonstrations and guidance throughout this course will help learners to experiment. Water soluble coloured pencils will be used to extend skills with a brush, thereby introducing painting into the mix. Learners will begin this course by seeing how coloured pencils can be used to create very subtle colour blending, by the combining of colours on the surface of the paper. Drawing techniques will follow building on textures and light to dark tonal qualities. Photos of landscapes/gardens will be chosen to bring this practical knowledge to the fore, with photos of Denman grounds available to learners if they wish to use these as subject matter. Emphasis will be on working within a group and exploring different ways of extending and enjoying drawing opportunities. Approx cost of materials, as a guide is £8. If you require further information, please contact Denman on 01865 391991.

There are seven billion people on the face of the earth, and most of them have two eyes, a nose and a mouth – yet, with the exception of identical twins, they are all recognisable one from another. How can this many faces, each so similar, be recognised as different? We will learn ways of seeing these differences, and will draw several portraits, including a self-portrait drawn in a mirror. This fascinating area of art is admired above all others, because ‘getting a likeness’ seems to be the hardest thing to do. In fact, following tried and tested methods, it may not be as difficult as you think.

Mountmellick is a traditional, hand embroidery technique, which is both beautiful to look at and relaxing to do. If you are a newcomer to embroidery, Mountmellick is an ideal technique with which to begin, as it employs many lovely stitches which are also used in other forms of embroidery. It is a 'white on white', highly textured technique developed in Ireland during the 19th century. On this course you will learn how to transfer your design onto fabric, dress a frame, and start a piece of work using a great variety of stitches. You will also make samples of the knitted fringe that is a characteristic of this type of work. Everyone is welcome on this course, from the newcomer to the 'addict', come and see how easy and satisfying hand embroidery can be. The aim of this course is to provide the chance for lovers of traditional hand stitchery to get back to basics and learn the rules before being asked to bend them. It also aims to help the student to produce helpful working samples to gain a firm knowledge of this technique which employs many varied and beautiful stitches that can also be used in other forms of embroidery. The course begins with a short introduction to the technique and an explanation of the equipment and materials needed. You will then concentrate on producing either helpful working samples or a piece of work utilising many stitches to which you can refer at a later date as a source of reference. By the end of the course the student will have gained enough experience and knowledge to identify Mountmellick embroidery, know what materials and equipment are needed and be able to execute a great variety of stitches. Please bring: * General sewing equipment to include embroidery scissors and chenille needles. * A frame – either tambour (round) and/or a slate frame size 8in or 10in or 12in. * Crochet cotton, to lace fabric to frame(if using a slate frame). * Pre-washed closely woven heavy duty white cotton fabric (Twill or cotton sateen or satin jean) to fit frame. * A variety of white cotton threads, i.e., Perle 3, 5, 8 and 12, coton a broder, embroidery soft, etc, if you already have them. *Tracing paper, pencil and dressmakers carbon or a water soluble pen. * A pair of number 10 or 12 knitting needles (old size – or metric equivalent) (I’m not sure of metric sizes). The tutor will have the following for sale: Heavy duty cotton satin fabric suitable for Mountmellick work. A few yarns. Photocopied sheets of stitches, instructions and designs. Square/oblong frames on which to work. Copies of her book. Approximate additional cost to students for materials: £3 - £7. If you would like additional information on this course, please contact Denman on 01865 391 991.
