Eleanor was Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right, she was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in western Europe. She could read and write and was dynamic and highly cultured. Eleanor was successively married to the King Louis VII of France and Henry II of England and was the mother of two English Kings; King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) and King John I.
