Home • Access Anytime • On Demand History : Tilo’s Talk on Arabic Calligraphy
Welcome to our new ‘Denman On Demand’ courses, where you can tune into pre recorded demonstrations & talks at a time which suits you! This class will be available to view for 7 days after purchase.
Arabic calligraphy is very different from Western calligraphy. European calligraphy is focused mainly on the written word, and there are beautifully written and illuminated books written in Arabic script as well, of course. But Islam discouraged the use of imagery in decoration from an early time, so calligraphy started to fill that void by serving a multitude of decorative purposes. It does so on all manner of materials like wood, stone, ceramic, glaze, even light, and on any items you could imagine, from fabric to glass, gemstones to plaster, wood to stone. This talk is about to highlight what the story of calligraphy in the Arabic script and what it is able to achieve when released from the surface of parchment.
Please note this is a recording from a live talk.
