‘Sense & Sensibility’ (1811) was Jane’s first published novel and contrasts the differing approaches to the problems of life and love in two temperamentally different sisters. Elinor is sensible and prudent and keeps her problems to herself and deals with people and issues with tact. Marianne, in contrast, represents the newly emerging Romanticism and is hysterical, self indulgent and on occasions rude, though basically good hearted. As usual Jane advocates steering a middle course between extremes, though siding more with Elinor.
