The Empires of West Africa may not have lasted quite as long as Ancient Egypt or the Kingdom of Kush in Nubia, but they were the crucial point of contact for trade between the Mediterranean world and West Africa. The kings of Ghana, Mali and Songhai were at the head of some of the most powerful empires of their time. Therefore, it’s not surprising that a city like Timbuktu has become the stuff of legend in African and European alike. My talk will highlight some of those legends, teach you about an important place and time in history, and show you some of the beautiful sights of a region most know near to nothing about.
