Here is a wonderful opportunity to learn about this fascinating craft at Denman College, set in delightful grounds in the village of Marcham in Oxfordshire.
Calligraphy is defined in the dictionary as the art of beautiful writing, but you don’t have to be an artist to enjoy this craft and obtain satisfying results. This course has been designed to help the absolute beginner to ‘make good letters and arrange them well’. We will concentrate on the Foundation Hand – this being the ‘mother hand’ – before going on to look at elements of layout and design. Students will be able to work at their own pace with individual instruction from the tutor. It is hoped that by the end of the workshop, members will be able to take away a short piece of work and feel confident to attend further courses. Left handers welcome!
Students to Bring:
H or HB pencil
Pencil sharpener or knife
A bottle of ordinary black fountain pen ink.
If you have any difficulties in obtaining these, they can easily be purchased by mail order from Blots Pen and Ink Supplies:
www.blotspens.co.uk tel: 01617 206916
The tutor will supply fibre tip calligraphy pens and metal nibs for dip pens at a small additional fee.
Please bring a short piece of text to write out (something which has a meaning for you).
An apron might be advisable in case of ink spillage.
