President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the Bayeux Tapestry will be loaned to Britain for public display - the first time the tapestry has left France for 950 years. In this project we will be taking a section and creating a stumpwork interpretation giving it a 3-dimensional quality. All levels of experience are welcome as we learn techniques from this 17th century English form of raised and padded embroidery.
Stumpwork consists of a background design to which surface embroidery and paddings are added. Different elements are then made separately and added to this design creating a freestanding and dimensional effect. This course will enable you to learn various traditional techniques and apply them to a design based around our theme. You may work to a ready prepared design, work from a photograph or picture, or a design of your own. The ready prepared design is worked through step-by-step with the aid of tutor handouts, instructions and demonstrations throughout. Some of the techniques included will be padding and raising, freestanding elements, needle lace and surface embroidery. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the history of this fascinating form of 17th century English embroidery. All levels of experience are welcome.
A complete kit of the design is available which you can purchase for £13. If you do not wish to purchase a kit and choose to bring your own threads, a materials pack is available for the project at a cost of £6.50.Book Now
