This Pre Christmas-course will encourage students to find out more about the history of pearls and to experience the wide variety of shapes, colour and types of pearl as they create, making them ideal not simply for special occasions but for everyday wear. They will have the opportunity to make not just their own pearl necklace but also gifts for Christmas for friends , family and loved ones.

The aim is to learn three skills during the course in and fun and enjoyable way that will allow students to leave with items they can either wear or give as gifts . The three topics they will learn are Chinese knotting for pearls and beads, using wire and spacers to create a floating necklace and Indian wiring to create earrings. There will be several types of kits available for students to allow for varying levels of dexterity and students will be able to select whichever kits they feel appropriate. The pearl knotting will be on silk and will produce a full 18-inch knotted pearl necklace  which students may also enhance with glass or gemstone beads. The additional materials will be available in the class allowing them to select colours and shapes that appeal to them personally. Should they choose they can use the same kit to produce 2 knotted bracelets instead of the one necklace. An allowance for the additional stones is made in the kit of up to 10 beads .The knotted necklaces are made using a Chinese knotting tool and pre threaded silk. The students may select silk colours as well as bead colours at the start of the class. Additionally, they will learn how to make a “floating necklace “ which is an elegant and simple way of creating impact with beads and or pearls. To compliment the above two necklaces, they will also learn how to make Indian wired earrings. The earrings are for pieced ears, but clip adaptors will also be available for ladies who do not have pierced ears. During the course Elizabeth will talk both about real pearls and gemstones; it is a lively way of learning many facts and stories about the history of gems we all love and how they are  created.  Students may bring their own pearls, but they need to be real and of a reasonable size.  All tools and materials are available from the tutor.  Elizabeth Hunt is an experienced teacher and jeweller, so students all progress at their own pace with as much assistance as needed.

The cost of materials will be £55, which is an adequate estimate of materials, but course members may choose more expensive materials if they wish.
