In the final part of this new course on the 1914-1918 conflict, Simon will focus on the aftermath of the fighting in 1919 and beyond. The Armistice of November 1918 was only an agreement to stop fighting – the end of the war only really came with the ensuing peace treaties. This session will explore how these were negotiated, and to what extent they contributed to the rise of fascism, especially in Germany, and the subsequent even more bloody 1939-45 conflict. There will also be suggestions for further study and reading; and a slightly more extended opportunity than usual for questions at the end.
Note: although this course is offered as a series, each lecture also stands alone, and participants are welcome to attend individual talks in the series.
