Arabic calligraphy differs from Latin/European calligraphy. European calligraphy is focused mainly on the written word, and there are beautifully written and illuminated books written in Arabic script, of course. But Islam condemned the use of imagery in decoration from an early time, so calligraphy has begun to serve a multitude of decorative purposes on all manner of materials like wood, stone, ceramic, glaze, even light, and on any items you could imagine, from fabric to glass, gemstones to plaster, wood to stone. This talk is about to highlight what calligraphy is able to do achieve when released from the surface of parchment.
