This is a course for all who love trees and want to know more about them. The magnificent trees in Denman’s gardens and 130 acre Harcourt Arboretum will give us a chance to consider broadleaf and deciduous specimens, country of origin, name, clues for identification, seeds and fruits, landscape and aesthetic value.

To benefit and enjoy the course, all that is needed is an interest and curiosity about these splendid plants, and being happy outdoors. All are welcome, whether you have a garden or not. Much of the course time will be spent in the Arboretum and Denman Gardens, unless the weather is very wet.

We will have a background briefing session on the first evening, highlighting the main events in the history of Harcourt  Arboretum, which is part of the University of Oxford Botanical Gardens, but situated  in Nuneham Courtnay about 15-30 mins from Denman. It has some of the tallest Giant Sequioas (Wellingtonias) in the country, and the Acers (Maples) may still have fine autumn colours.

On the afternoon visit, there will be a 2 hour long walk with standing of 10-15 mins. We hope to arrange a guided tour.

There are no refreshment facilities at the Arboretum, tea will be taken on return to Denman

This course does not deal with trees suitable for gardens, or offer advice on participant’s trees for/in their own gardens, but this may be offered as a separate course in the future.
