Denman are thrilled to welcome Esther Rutter, Author of the truly fascinating book, This Golden Fleece- A Journey through Britain’s Knitted History for what will be a fascinating talk.

This Golden Fleece traces the history of wool and knitting throughout the British Isles.  Each chapter follows the creation of a particular garment pertinent to Britain’s craft culture, from protest knitting to fishermen’s jumpers, from funeral stockings to knitted swimwear. Through these garments Rutter examines the places and people that created them, working in the little-known stories of knitters from Shetland to the Channel Islands, from Wales to East Anglia. In today’s knitwear industries, she finds tradition and innovation intermingling. She also seeks to ‘myth bust’ commonly held assumptions and stories about knitting, and examines the role of knitting in the creativity of writers including Virginia Woolf and Lytton Strachey.

Outline of the Event:

2.30pm- Arrival Refreshments

3pm- Talk and Q&A

4.30pm- Afternoon Tea

5.30pm- departure
